Hailed as one of the first writers of science fiction, Mary Woolstonecraft Shelley (1797-1851) continues to inspire (and terrify). In a now famous competition between herself, her lover (another literary hopeful), and the famous writer Byron to see who could write the best horror story, Shelley wrote her novel Frankenstein, or A Modern Prometheus.  

Throughout her life Shelley suffered a significant amount of grief and loss, and yet always returned to her writing and travels. She's remembered today as the mother of horror and beating men at their own games.
