about

Welcome to the City of Witches! This is a community of women (real and fictional) portrayed in watercolor who prevailed over difficult times, rebelled, commented on the world, and lifted each other up. They are outcasts, artists, bosses, healers, sisters, and the women called witches.

I'm Kate, the watercolor artist in Kansas. Over the years I have painted myself little talismans, including women in history, to get me through dark times and find inspiration. I treasure every piece I work on and I hope you find a little joy in them.

The name City of Witches is inspired by the 15th c book The Book of the City of Ladies by Christine de Pizan. It's an allegorical work that takes place in a city entirely inhabited by women. She pushes back on negative stereotypes about women in the medieval world and highlights women's leadership, strength, and intelligence. It's an early feminist work that argues that women are worthy of rights and respect.
